Backpack design

I decided to do Lilla Rogers’ five month Assignment Bootcamp this year, although I’m still very much in two minds about going commercial with my art.

I thought I had it all figured out – creating designs and having it printed on various products and textiles and selling it from an online store, but I had such a bunch of problems with getting the right business partners and obtaining funds to have products printed, that I’ve put it on the backburner for now.

I still love a challenge though and knew it would get me creating again, which has also been a problem for me the past few months.

The bootcamp is designed to help build up a portfolio of designs with monthly assignments by Lilla herself. Our first assignment was to design an abstract pattern or motif for a backpack and after playing around for two weeks I came up with a design which reminds me of graffiti.

The original pattern was very colourful with every colour under the rainbow but in the end a limited palette looked better with the backpack I decided to use.

BTW: If you are an artist/designer and struggling to find nice product images, do yourself a favour and go look on Wikimedia. I found this beautiful Michael Kors backpack with a Creative Commons Attribution license. Meaning as long as you mention where the image originates from you are free to use and adapt it for your own use.

PS: If you would prefer to make your own mockups instead of having to buy them but you’re not sure how to go about it, the following two links might be useful to you.
